As we look around our country, and indeed the world, we see turmoil, suffering, and unfortunately death, on a widespread scale unknown since the tragedy we call World War II. To add to this, the political systems which we have taken for granted for decades seem to be mortally divided and crumbling before our very eyes. However, the Tradition is no stranger to times such as these. A quick glance at our history brings that fact into stark focus: the Albigensian Crusade, the Inquisition, the Black Death, the Wars of Religion, and in more recent times the struggle against fascism in the mid-twentieth century.
Terrible as all these events and times were, our Tradition survived and prospered, carrying on and protecting our legacy. That is not to say that it was easy, because in truth it was not, but survive we did, sometimes in the face of what today would appear to be almost insurmountable odds. Based upon this history, one perhaps might feel inclined to ask how we did so, given the terrible nature of any one of those events. The answer lies at the heart of both the Tradition and the practical application of its teachings. Our path is not simply a handy tool that you can use whenever you are feeling a little stressed or downhearted; a quick “pick me up” to be kept in the cupboard like a bottle of aspirin. It is a structured daily practice that includes a myriad of tools for dealing with just such times as these, tools that enhance our lives and fortify us to deal with the daily challenges that arise to face us.
